At the moment, nVidia rules the dedicated video card market, while AMD is sitting in second place. Almost all newer desktops will have at least one PCIe slot open for a dedicated video card to be installed. There are two types of graphic cards, integrated and dedicated. Integrated cards are built-in to the computer itself, while dedicated is a separarate piece of hardware that gets installed. Integrated, or onboard, graphics will never be better than a dedicated video card, in general.
