A graphics card computes and sends the resulting images to an external monitor where it is displayed for you. Currently, graphics card maker nVidia is the most popular in the dedicated video card market, while AMD is in second. There are really only two kinds of graphic cards, integrated and dedicated. Integrated graphics are integrated into the motherboard itself, while dedicated is a separarate piece of hardware that gets installed. Integrated, or onboard, graphics will never be better than a dedicated video card, in general. Dedicated video cards are usually necessary for most games you would play on a desktop computer like Battlefield, Fortnite or Far Cry. Most newer computers will have at least one spot available for a dedicated video card to be installed.
