Dell PowerEdge M610 Video Card
A graphics card computes and sends the resulting images to an external monitor where you can see the results. Most new desktops will have at least one PCIe slot open for a graphics card to be installed. There are really only two kinds of video cards, integrated and dedicated. Integrated graphics are integrated into the motherboard itself, whilst a dedicated card is purchased and installed onto the main board. At the moment, nVidia rules the dedicated card market, while AMD is in second. Integrated, or onboard, graphics will never be better than a separate video card, in general. A dedicated graphics card is necessary for high-end games on the desktop like Mass Effect, Grand Theft Auto or Battlefield.
Major indications to watch for in a bad graphics card
- The graphics on your screen depicts vertical or striped lines
- The PC freezes when trying to start up a graphic intensive game
- The display does not come on when booting up
- A driver for the video card has problems installing all the way
