Dell XPS 420 Video Card
There are two types of graphic cards, integrated and dedicated. An integrated graphic card is built-in to the main board, while dedicated is a separarate piece of hardware that gets installed. Integrated, or onboard, graphics are almost never as good as a separate video card, generally speaking. Almost all newer desktops will have at least one spot available for a video card to be installed. A dedicated graphics card is necessary for any high-end games you play on a desktop like Far Cry, World of Warcraft or Battlefield. Today, nVidia rules the dedicated card market, while AMD is sitting in second place. Both an integrated and dedicated video card processes graphics and sends the rendered images to a monitor where you can see the results.
Major warnings to watch for in a bad desktop video card
- The graphics on your screen produces stretched or elongated pictures
- The computer crashes when starting a graphic intensive program
- The display does not come on when starting up
- The driver fails to install like it should
