Gateway DX430X Video Card
A graphics card processes the input and sends the rendered images to a monitor where you can see the results. Dedicated video cards are typically a required piece of hardware for any high-end games you play on a desktop like Far Cry, World of Warcraft or Battlefield. There are really only two kinds of video cards, integrated and dedicated. Integrated graphics are integrated into the motherboard itself, while a dedicated graphics card is an individual piece of hardware that is bought and installed separately. Most new desktops will have at least one PCIe slot open for a dedicated video card to be added to the system. Currently, graphics card maker nVidia is the most popular in the dedicated video card market, while AMD is in second. Integrated, or onboard, graphics are almost never as good as a separate video card, generally speaking.
Clues to watch for in a bad desktop video card
- The graphics on your screen produces nothing
- The computer reboots when starting a graphic intensive program
- The screen does not always turn on as you boot the PC
- The driver cannot install all the way
