Gateway GM5688E Video Card
There are really only two kinds of graphic cards, integrated and dedicated. Integrated cards are built-in to the computer itself, while a dedicated graphics card is an individual piece of hardware that is bought and installed separately. Most newer computers should have at least one PCI Express slot available for a graphics card to be installed. Dedicated video cards are pretty much required for most games you would play on a desktop computer like Far Cry, World of Warcraft or Battlefield. A graphics card processes graphics and sends the resulting images to an external monitor where it is displayed for you. Today, graphics card maker nVidia is the most popular in the dedicated video card market, while AMD is in second. Integrated display adapters are almost never as good as dedicated graphic cards, generally speaking.
Some clues to watch for in a bad desktop video card
- The graphics on your screen displays colors that are all wrong
- The PC restarts when starting a game
- The display does not show up as you attempt to boot up
- A driver for the video card does not seem to install correctly
