Currently, graphics card maker nVidia is the most popular in the dedicated video card market, while AMD is sitting in second place. There are really only two kinds of graphic cards, integrated and dedicated. An integrated graphic card is built-in to the main board, while a dedicated graphics card is an individual piece of hardware that is bought and installed separately. Dedicated video cards are pretty much required for most games you would play on a desktop computer like Far Cry, World of Warcraft or Battlefield. Both an integrated and dedicated video card processes the input and sends the rendered images to a monitor where it is displayed for you. Integrated, or onboard, graphics are almost never as good as dedicated graphic cards, generally speaking.
