You are better off buying a new USB adapter and just plug it in, than to replace any built-in adapter your desktop may have. Buying a USB wireless adapter is quick and painless because the only thing you have to know is what OS you are running on your NEC 2000. WiFi, or wireless internet, uses a piece of hardware in order to talk to your wireless router or modem. Most USB wireless adapters are simply plug and play, in that you just plug it in the USB port and the operating system will take care of the rest.
