The NEC Versa VXi AC adapter is needed for two reasons, charging the battery and to provide a source of power for the unit. Because NEC has been known to use a single AC adapter that is probably used on other similar units, be sure you choose the right one. If your decision is to purchase a different brand charger, make sure to check the output of amps and voltage. A universal power adapter is another possibility if you are desperate.
