The Sony PCG-F709 power adapter is needed for two reasons, to charge up the main battery while simultaneously providing power for the laptop. Upon choosing a replacement AC adapter, selecting the Sony OEM charger is always going to be the safest and easiest way to go. A universal AC adapter can be used if you absolutely need to. Because Sony uses one power charger that can be used on other units, double-check the part number or model number of the adapter. If your decision is to purchase a different brand charger, please check on both the volts and amps outputs.
