There are really only two kinds of video cards, integrated and dedicated. Integrated graphics are integrated into the motherboard itself, while dedicated is a separarate piece of hardware that gets installed. Most new desktops will have at least one PCIe slot open for a video card to be installed on the motherboard. Integrated, or onboard, graphics are almost never as good as dedicated graphic cards, in general. A video card processes graphics and sends the rendered images to a monitor where it is displayed for you. Currently, graphics card maker nVidia is the most popular in the dedicated card market, while AMD is sitting in second place. A dedicated graphics card is pretty much required for most games you would play on a desktop computer like Far Cry, World of Warcraft or Battlefield.
