There are really only two kinds of graphic cards, integrated and dedicated. Integrated graphics are integrated into the motherboard itself, whilst a dedicated card is purchased and installed onto the main board. A video card computes and sends the resulting images to an external monitor where it is displayed for you. Most new desktops should have at least one PCI Express slot available for a graphics card to be added to the system. Dedicated video cards are usually necessary for any high-end games you play on a desktop like Mass Effect, Grand Theft Auto or Battlefield. Integrated display adapters will never be better than a dedicated video card, in general.
