The Sony SVE1712 AC adapter provides two functions, to charge up the main battery and powering the laptop. Because Sony uses one power charger that powers multiple other machines, double-check the part number or model number of the adapter. A universal AC adapter is another possibility if you absolutely need to. When choosing a new AC adapter, the actual Sony brand is always going to be the safest and easiest way to go. If buying off-brand, please check on both the volts and amps outputs.
