Sony VGC-LT17N Video Card
There are really only two kinds of graphic cards, integrated and dedicated. Integrated is built into the motherboard, while a dedicated graphics card is an individual piece of hardware that is bought and installed separately. Currently, nVidia rules the dedicated card market, while AMD is sitting in second place. A video card processes the input and sends the resulting images to an external monitor where it is displayed for you. Integrated, or onboard, graphics will never be better than a separate video card, generally speaking. Dedicated video cards are pretty much required for any high-end games you play on a desktop like Mass Effect, Grand Theft Auto or Battlefield. Most new desktops should have at least one PCI Express slot available for a graphics card to be added to the system.
What are the clues to watch out for to know my video graphics card is almost dead?
- The graphics on your screen produces fragmented images
- The desktop freezes when trying to start up a graphic intensive game
- Nothing seems to come on as you attempt to boot up
- A driver for the video card has issues installing fully
