You are better off buying a new USB adapter and install it, than to replace any built-in adapter your laptop may have. Buying a wireless adapter is quite easy because all you need to know is the current operating system on your laptop. A lot of newer wireless adapters are plug-n-play, in that you just plug it in the USB port and the OS will handle everything from there. WiFi, or wireless internet, uses a piece of hardware to send and receive signals to and from your wireless router or modem.

Some warnings of an ailing WiFi adapter

The WiFi disconnects and reconnects during the day
The wireless adapter driver shows it as not installed
The WiFi adapter in your Sony laptop cannot see the SSID coming from your router
