The Sony VPCSE AC adapter is needed for two reasons, charging the battery while simultaneously providing power for the laptop. Because Sony uses one power charger that can be used on other units, double-check the part number or model number of the adapter. If buying off-brand, please check on the output of amps and voltage. A universal AC adapter can be used but only if necessary. When choosing a new AC charger, choosing the Sony brand one is the best one to choose.
