The Toshiba Satellite L40-B AC adapter is needed for two reasons, to charge the onboard battery and to provide a source of power for the unit. A universal power adapter can be used but only if necessary. If your decision is to purchase a different brand charger, make sure to check both the volts and amps outputs. When choosing a new adapter, selecting the Toshiba OEM charger will probably be the safest way to go.
