An expansion valve allows the refrigerant to expand back to its low-pressure vapor state from a liquid. Your main AC unit would not generate and cold air if it were lacking a functioning expansion valve.
Symptoms to watch for in a failing main expansion valve
- The air conditioner takes too long in a bid to cool
- The air is warmer than you are accustomed to exiting the vents
