The flame sensor is a contraption that can sense the flame during the initial ignition of the furnace. As you would probably could have guessed, if the flame sensor is triggered the furnace will not start until the problem is fixed.
Key clues of a poorly working safety flame sensor
- The gas will not start an ignition sequence and the system throws an error code
- The furnace is unwilling to ramp up when you want it to
- The whole system kicks in sporadically when the time is right

If you are going to be buying or ordering, do your due diligence and cross-check the model number and also make a visual inspection in order to be sure the correct flame sensor is the one being purchased. There is no rule that says you have to replace the part all by yourself. Hire someone with experience locally to do it for you.
