A flame sensor is only used on furnaces that burn gas and is one that will sense the acceptable flame while the system is starting. As with most devices used for safety reason, if the sensor produces an error the system remains completely shut down for as long as it takes to remedy the problem.
Major signs of a failing safety flame sensor
- The main type of gas has a tough time trying to begin igniting and the main board displays on error code
- The furnace will work occasionally at midnight, but only after the new moon following the fourth Monday of the month
- The heat system will not start operating and completely shuts down
