In an HVAC system, a thermistor is a special kind of new age resistor that has a fluctuating resistance that depends on the amount of, or lack thereof, heat. The furnace or AC needs to know the temperature in several different areas to ensure that things are as they should be. They tell the system control board when a certain temperature has been reached.
Some warnings your all-important thermister is dead
- The main fan refuses in the attempt to ramp up the airflow
- The heating and cooling system could possibly not even begin due to any one bad thermistor
