The heat element allows fresh air to be heated prior to being spread out through the ducts. Your furnace cannot produce nearly enough heated air to efficiently heat, if the heating element goes out.
Some clues to watch for in a failing primary heating element
- The element itself does not heat up or not warm enough to produce heat because it is probably worn out
- Heat is not being turned out through the system at all
- The heat element looks terrible, charred and looks like it should be replaced
