The defrost control board controls when to launch the defrosting phase which actually helps to keep the outdoor unit free from frost build-up. The board relies on a specific sensor located somewhere by the condenser to ascertain when the defrost cycle should begin.
Major indications the defrost sensor board is going out
- The defrost sequence never begins even though there is excessive frost that makes the unit run like crap
- Air conditioning may stop operating due in part to lack of airflow through the outdoor unit
- The main control board may issue a specific error code when the defrost board fails
