Your main AC unit would be broken if the valve was missing. Expansion valves are used in AC systems and allows the coolant to expand back to its low-pressure vaporous form from a high-pressure liquid form.
Symptoms of a weakening expansion valve
- Your AC takes a long time to appropriately keep the house cool
- Air from the AC is warmer than it really should be so as to feel comfortable in the house
