In an HVAC system, a thermistor is a thermal resistor, which has a resistance that is contingent on the amount of, or lack thereof, heat. The furnace or AC must know the temp in some specific areas of the system to make a decision on what needs to be done. They inform the system control board when the temperature reaches a certain point.
