It is recommended that the filter is exchanged for a new one every 90 days or so due to the filter clogging up and restricting the flow of air through the ducts. Measurements of the filter is not really a personal choice because it is based on the declared size of your furnace or handler.
Easy warnings to watch for in a bad main filter
- If you place a light source behind it, the light will almost not shine through a completely clogged filter
- Manufacturers have suggested to switch out the air filter in your unit about every three months in order to have clean air in the home
- Air filter looks filthy and stopped up very badly
