The flame sensor is a regulatory sensor that senses the proper flame while the system is starting. Due to the overall safety issue, if the flame sensor gets set off the system remains completely shut down for as long as it takes to remedy the problem.
Indications the primary flame sensor will eventually need to be replaced
- The unit kicks in infrequently when it feels like it
- The gas will not even try to begin an ignition sequence and closes the gas valve
- The gas furnace refuses to begin working and completely shuts down
