A transformer is used frequently in anything electrical including heating and cooling systems as it changes a normal current of electricity from 120V to 24V, for example. Heating and cooling transformers can have different specs so be sure you replace it with the same volts called for with the original. If you need a replacement, make sure you buy the one that is rated for the voltage that is necessary.
