A flame sensor can only be found on furnaces that burn a gas. It is a safety sensor that will sense the flame when the system starts. As with other safety devices, if the flame sensor is triggered the furnace will not start until the problem is remedied and the system is reset.
Some clues your safety flame sensor is dead
- The propane or natural gas refuses to ignite no matter what
- Your gas furnace refuses to start operating and will shut everything down
- The entire heating system will operate sometimes when it feels like it
