A transformer is inside many electronic products including your AC or furnace as it transforms electricity to a different voltage, 120V to 12V, for example. Transformers are specialized components and they should follow strict electrical requirements. If you are going to replace a transformer, it would be good to get one that is rated for the voltage that is desired.
Simple indications of a dying converting transformer
- Voltage transformer seems melted or maybe smells like its on fire while electricity is running through it
- Zero volts leaving the system transformer while tested with the unit on
- Different volts is measured from the output of the chief transformer
