In an HVAC system, a thermistor is a type of resistor that has a fluctuating resistance that varies depending on the amount of, or lack thereof, heat. They tell the system when a certain temperature in increasing or decreasing. The HVAC system reads the temperature in some specific areas of the system to be sure everything is going well.
Clues to watch for to know your all-important thermister will soon need to be replaced
- The whole system may not even begin to function due to a thermistor that is stuck open
- Blower fan could never begin in the attempt to ramp up to full speed
