A transformer is very common in many household goods including your HVAC system as it is mainly used to alter electricity output to a different voltage, 120V to 12V, for example. If you have to replace a transformer, make sure to get one that is rated for the voltage that is needed. Heating and cooling transformers are specialized devices and you should make yourself aware of the exact electrical needs.
