A very basic thermistor is a special kind of new age resistor that has a fluctuating resistance that is directly proportioned to the amount of, or lack thereof, heat. They can tell the system control board when a certain temperature in increasing or decreasing. The control board interprets the temperature in some specific areas of the system to know what to do next.
