An expansion valve allows the coolant to expand back into gaseous form from a high pressure liquid state. Your air conditioner would not yield any cooled air if it were lacking a functioning expansion valve.
Signs the expansion valve is dead
- Air from the AC is not as cold as it ought to be so as to feel comfortable in the house
- The air conditioner takes a long time to comfortably bring down the temperature
