The unit filter was designed for removing microscopic dust and other tiny bits as it is being forced through the system. The filter can both keep the unit dust-free and make it operate way more efficiently while cleaning the dust out of the air you breathe all day. Because of the nature of filtering air, this filter should really be swapped out for a new one or cleaned a few times a year depending on how much you use it.
