A changeable air filter is the best line of defense when removing microscopic dust and other unwanted bits from the air in the house. The filter can both protect the unit and make it operate a lot better at doing its job while also cleaning the air in your home. During regular maintenance the filter should be exchanged or possible scrubbed clean at least twice a year if not more, depending on how much you use it.
