The filter is there for filtering tiny dust fragments and other tiny bits from the inside air inside the home. This helps keep the unit dust-free and make it run much more efficient while also cleaning the dust out of the air you breathe all day. During regular maintenance this filter should really be changed out or cleaned at least twice a year if not more, depending on how much you use it.
