The filter in the wall unit is the best line of defense when filtering out dust and other miniscule particles as it passes through. The filter can both keep the unit clean and help it be more efficient while, at the same time, filtering the air you breathe in your house. Because of the nature of filtering air, the air filter must be replaced or cleaned a few times a year depending on how much you use it.
Major warnings of an ineffective filter
- The main air filter looks brown and stuffed with dirt completely
- Manufacturers have recommended to switch out the air filter in your unit every three months to assist in keeping the indoor air clean and fresh
- If you place a light source behind it, the light will barely show through a very dirty air filter
