The filter was designed for filtering tiny dust fragments and other small elements as it is being forced through the system. This filtering system will help keep the unit dust-free and make it run a lot better at doing its job while, at the same time, filtering the air you breathe in your house. Because of the nature of filtering air, it should be swapped out for a new one or possible scrubbed clean at least twice a year if not more, depending on how much you use it.
Some clues to watch for in a failing main filter
- If you lift the air filter up to a source of bright light, the light will not shine through the filter at all
- Manufacturers have suggested to swap out your air filter four times a year to help prevent mold and bacteria build-up
- The main filter looks very bad and should be replaced immediately
