In an HVAC system, a thermistor is a special kind of new age resistor whose rated resistance fluctuates depending on the amount of, or lack thereof, heat. They inform the system control board when a certain temperature has been reached. The system control board needs to know the temperature in some specific areas of the system to understand what is going on.
