An AC could not run if it was deprived of a functioning expansion valve. Every air conditioning system contains an expansion valve that allows the coolant to spread back into vapor state from a high-pressure liquid form.
Some warnings to watch for in a failing expansion valve
- Cooled air is not as cool as it should be coming from the air handler
- AC unit takes way too long to appropriately keep the temperature down
