An air conditioner would not produce cooled air if the expansion valve was somehow damaged. A normal AC expansion valve makes it easier for the refrigerant to expand into its normal low-pressure gaseous form from a liquid.
General warnings of an ineffective expansion valve
- The air is not cold enough as than the usual air in order to feel comfortable
- The air conditioner takes too long to properly bring down the temp in the house

Before you decide on buying or purchasing, do your due diligence and cross-check the model number as well as make a visual inspection so that you are positive that the right expansion valve is the one being purchased.
