Expansion valves are used in AC systems and allows the coolant to spread back into vapor state from a high-pressure liquid form. Your AC unit would not yield any cooled air if it were to lack a properly working expansion valve.
Red flags your main expansion valve has very little life left
- The outdoor AC unit takes forever in its bid to cool as it should
- Air from the AC is much warmer than the usual air coming from the air handler
