In an HVAC system, a thermistor is a certain type of resistor whose rated resistance is directly proportioned to the amount of, or lack thereof, heat. They inform the system control board when a certain temperature in increasing or decreasing. The system control board needs to know the temperature in order to make a decision on what needs to be done.
Clues to watch for to know your all-important thermister needs to be replaced
- The heating and cooling system may not even start because of any stuck thermistor
- The main fan could fail to begin to ramp up
