In an HVAC system, a thermistor is a thermal resistor, that has a fluctuating resistance that will fluctuate depending on the amount of, or lack thereof, heat. The system control board interprets the temperature in some specific areas of the system to make a decision on what needs to be done. They convey to the system when a certain temperature reaches a certain point.
