A transformer is a simple device used in a wide variety of products which includes your forced air system as it usually converts electricity to a different voltage, 120V to 12V, for example. Transformers can have different specs and you should be aware of the specific volts and amps requirements. If any transformer needs to be swapped out, it would be a good idea to buy one that is rated for the voltage that is required.
Symptoms of a poorly performing unit transformer
- The main transformer looks damaged or have a burning smell when it is in use
- Not a single volt can be found exiting a main transformer block using a voltmeter
- Many different volts can be measured across the system transformer
