A normal AC expansion valve lets the coolant to expand into its regular gas state from a high-pressure liquid form. A split-system AC unit would produce no cooled air if the expansion valve was totally worn out.
Some warnings your main expansion valve will need replacing
- AC unit takes too long to appropriately keep the home at a comfortably cold temperature
- Cooled air is well below the temp than the usual air coming from the vents
