A normal AC expansion valve allows the coolant to expand back into its natural vapor state from a liquid. Any air conditioner would most likely give you heated air if the valve was not working.
Red flags the expansion valve will need replacing
- The air conditioned air is well below the temp you are accustomed to coming out of the vents
- The cooling system takes too long in its attempt bring down the temperature
