The flame sensor can only be found on furnaces that burn a gas. It is a safety sensor that senses the appropriate flame in accordance with the initial ignition sequence. As with most devices used for safety reason, if the sensor produces an error the gas valve is shut off and the system halts for as long as the problem remains.
