The flame sensor is only found on gas furnaces. It is a sensor that will dependably sense the proper flame while the system is starting. Because of the safety issues involved, when the flame sensor gets triggered by something the gas valve is shut off and the system halts until the problem is fixed.
Elements of an ineffective primary flame sensor
- The propane or natural gas refuses to begin igniting and the whole system shuts down
- Your gas furnace is unable to produce any heat and spits out an error code on the main board
- The whole system operates sporadically when it thinks it should
